Photographs by Pablo ZamoraIt has been four years since the ex-stage comedian Morgane Fleury opened her “cave-écologique” on Paris’ seedy Rue Saint-Denis to showcase the biodynamic bubbles that bear her family name. In the intervening years, the wonderfully chaotic Ma Cave Fleury has become a tightly held secret for a bohemian coterie of Parisian actors and musicians who revel in its unpretentious joie de vivre and affordable bottles (costing as little as €25). Its unassuming appearance and unlikely location amid X-rated stores in a gentrifying area belies the fact that it is the cellar door of the small respected Champagne house Fleury Père Et Fils.
Now in their fourth generation, the Fleurys are acknowledged as pioneers in winemaking. Morgane Fleury’s great grandfather Emile was the first to plant grafted pinot noir in the region after the invasion of phylloxera. Grandfather Robert took the unusual step of bottling his own grapes when they were refused by the “Grandes Marques” in 1929. And Morgane’s father, Jean-Pierre, was the first producer in the Champagne region to convert entirely to biodynamics in 1992.
“Of course we were early, it was difficult, and many people thought my parents were crazy,” says Fleury of her father’s decision to embrace biodynamic agriculture. “Now if you go biodynamic or move natural (and your wine is good), you become famous directly,” she adds, alluding to burgeoning interest in the movement in Paris and beyond.
The small store/bar, where barrels become makeshift tables that are rolled away at a moment’s notice for one of the regular jazz performances that often spill out into the street, is packed with ephemera from wine and stage careers. Fleury runs it all in an entertaining double act with her friend, the striking former actress Mireille Langlois.
